"Yeah, exactly where you're supposed to hit 'em, but the thing didn't even flinch! And it did come back, three nights later."

The Doctor looks very thoughtful at this exchange. As the bartender turns toward another customer, he says very quietly, "I wonder if it's a robot."

"Or at least equally not-dragon," she agrees.

"In any event, it might help explain whatever the temporal anomaly is," the Doctor says. "There shouldn't be robots, or not-dragon things, or even dragons, come to that, around here. And even if there were, it seems like these people could use some help. Feel like going out on dragon patrol?"

"Sounds like fun." Margary grins.

"Let's get started then," the Doctor suggests.

(You hesitate a moment, thinking about how to pay for the drinks in front of you, then recall that you have at least one thin gold disc, from battling Cybermen on the planet Hespera IV, still in your pocket.)

Margary sets it on the bar, gestures to the barkeep, hoping it will at least be enough.

The barkeep picks it up, tests it on his teeth, then says, "Hang on a minute." He pulls a small hand-axe from beneath the bar, splits the disc into four pieces, and hands three of them back to you. "That'll cover you and your friend," he says. "Thank you for your custom, and good luck."

You step outside with the Doctor, and Lightbeam rejoins you. I tried to stay out of everyone's way. They seem afraid of me, and I don't know what to do about that.

The Doctor looks at the sky then back at you. "Let's get to the outskirts of town," he suggests. "If we spot whatever it is, perhaps we can keep it away from the town. At least until we figure out what exactly it is and what it wants."

It isn't anything you did. Try not to worry about it. "That sounds like the easiest place to start. Which almost certainly isn't how it will finish, of course."

The three of you walk around the outskirts of the village, past a number of houses with small barns and kitchen gardens, as the sun sinks lower in the sky. As the sun sets, the moon rises, a little larger than the one you are familiar with and quite bright, as it is very nearly full.

A short time after the sun has completely set, you are walking past a house with a larger pasture nearby. One of the locals is tending to a herd of creatures that look rather like sheep, but are closer to the size of cattle. You are still looking up toward the moon, when you suddenly realize that what appeared to be a dark spot on the surface is, in fact, something in the air. Whatever it is, it's moving toward you, and fast.

Eyes widening, Margery backs up a few steps. Kir!
